NIOS (National institute of Open Schooling) is “open school” to cater to the needs of a heterogeneous group of learners up to pre-degree level. The Ministry of Human Resources Development (MHRD), Government of India set up the National Open School in November 1989 (NOS). In July 2002, The Ministry of Human Resources Development amended the nomenclature of the organization from National Open School (NOS) to National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) with a mission to provide relevant continuing education at the school stage up to Pre-Degree level.
NIOS operates through a network of five departments, Regional Centres and accredited institution in India and abroad. NIOS is the largest open schooling system on the world.
